Walton Construction's Dan Cogswell, Lance Garrett and Cheryl Griffeth each earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Professional Accreditation. Cogswell, a recent Missouri State University graduate, is a project engineer for the Northstar Battery plant job. Garrett, from Walton's Kansas City division, is the project manager for the Springfield-Branson National Airport replacement terminal. Griffeth is the first woman at Walton Construction to earn the LEED AP designation, and her current projects include preconstruction services on the First Baptist Church of Nevada.

Education

Helen Reid was named dean of MSU's College of Health and Human Services. Reid has a doctorate in food science-foods and nutrition from Kansas State University, as well as master's and bachelors' degrees from KSU.

MSU's Board of Governors added Orvin T. Kimbrough, 34, of St. Louis. University board members - appointed by the governor - represent each of Missouri's nine congressional districts. Kimbrough, whose term ends Jan. 1, 2015, is senior vice president for major gifts and planned giving for the United Way of Greater St. Louis.

Southwest Baptist University President Pat Taylor was elected to the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities' board of directors. Taylor, president of SBU since 1996 and previously chief academic officer at Oklahoma Baptist University, has a doctorate in education with an emphasis in history and philosophy from University of Memphis.

Curt Gilstrap, Drury University assistant professor of communication, was named director of the school's Master of Arts in Communication program. Gilstrap, who also advises the Drury debate program, received his rhetorical studies doctorate in 2003 from Purdue University and a master's degree in communication in 1997 from MSU.

Sandra Byrd, MSU accountancy and public affairs professor, received the United Way subcontract agreement for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance graduate assistant project. The $7,340 award is to expand coverage and hire two graduate students for VITA. During the 2008 tax season, MSU students helped more than 48,000 individuals get more than $8 million in tax refunds.

MSU mathematics professor Larry Campbell received a $55,360 subcontract from the Clinton School District for the Missouri Middle Grades Mathematics Leadership Academy, which aims to enhance teachers' knowledge, explore teaching methods and create stronger teams of teachers in partner schools, which include MSU, University of Central Missouri, Ozark Public Schools and Clinton Public Schools.

Campbell also received a $59,881 Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Subaward Agreement from the Ozark School District for his Missouri Secondary Mathematics Leadership Academy project.

Xin Miao, MSU assistant professor of geography, geology and planning, received a $111,597 grant from the University of Nevada for the Ecosystem Indicators project, which will map the ecosystem in Clark County and determine the distribution of the area's vegetation. The model will cover 11 area ecosystems through July 2011.

MSU geography professor Robert Pavlowsky received a $5,000 subconsultant agreement from Olsson Associates Inc. for the Sequiota Park/Galloway Branch geo-assessment project. Pavlowsky will try to create a natural stream channel that remains stable over time.

MSU biology professor Lynn Robbins was awarded an $8,500 subconsultant agreement from Western Ecosystems Technology Inc. for the habitat assessment and bat call analyses in Atchison County, Mo./Farmer's City II Wind Farm project. Robbins is studying whether the habitat is suitable for the endangered Indiana bat and whether the bat's activity is impacted by proposed wind farms.

Little Angels Learning Academy achieved recognition of excellence from the Missouri Center for Accreditation. The certificate is for programs offering developmentally appropriate experiences to help children grow intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically.

Food Services

Bob Bell was named executive vice president and chief technical officer for American Dehydrated Foods Inc., International Dehydrated Foods Inc. and Food Ingredients Technology Co. LLC. He focuses on regulatory compliance programs and product research and development. Bell has worked for the companies since 1983 and most recently served as chief operating officer.

Transportation

The institute named Springfield Public Works' traffic engineering division the Transportation Achievement Award winner for a public agency. Traffic engineering was recognized for the lowest number of traffic crashes in the city in 12 years, implementing 25 miles-per-hour residential speed limits and scoring well on the National Traffic Signal Report Card.
