Court Appointed Special Advocates of Southwest Missouri received national certification from the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association in Seattle. Certification acknowledges outstanding achievement in child advocacy and indicates that the local CASA branch is in compliance with the national group's standards for advocacy.
Jan Sederholm, executive director of Habitat for Humanity in Springfield, received a scholarship from Habitat for Humanity International that will enable her to participate in the Strategic Prospectives in Nonprofit Management program through Harvard Business School's executive education program.
Education
Newsweek magazine named Central High School among the top 1,500 U.S. high schools. Central, the only school in southwest Missouri on the list, was No. 1,254 - up from No. 1,306 last year - based on the number of advanced placement, international baccalaureate and Cambridge tests taken by students divided by the number of graduating seniors.
Charles Self was named associate professor of church history at Assemblies of God Theological Seminary. Self previously served as an adjunct professor and a director of the West Coast branch of the seminary. He has a doctorate and a master's degree in history along with a master's degree in philosophical and systematic theology.
Sheri Phillips, Evangel University's director of career development, received her doctorate in higher education leadership during July 31 graduation ceremonies at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif. Phillips is a 1981 graduate of Evangel with a bachelor's degree in psychology. She has worked at Evangel since 1985.
Tim Siebert, urban program specialist for the University of Missouri Extension in Greene County, took on the added role of county program director July 1. Seibert is responsible for creating and maintaining sustainable extension programming in Greene County.
Michael Reed, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Missouri State University, is joining a NASA project to map the interior of star structures. Reed was named subgroup chairman for the Kepler Asteroseismic Science Consortium, a project that will utilize the Kepler satellite to analyze the interior of stars using seismology. The satellite, which was launched in March, has a telescope that will measure the brightness of specific stars for three and a half years.
Amy Marie Aufdembrink, an academic adviser with Missouri State University, was one of five recipients of a scholarship from the National Academic Advising Association. The Wesley R. Habley National Academic Advising Association Summer Institute Scholarship will pay for Aufdembrink's attendance at the association's summer professional conference.
Becky McKnight, coordinator of the physical therapist assistant program at Ozarks Technical Community College, was named the 2009 F.A. Davis Outstanding Physical Therapist Assistant Educator of the Year by The American Physical Therapy Association. McKnight received her award June 11 at the association's annual conference in Baltimore.

Paul M. Atchley, a representative for Modern Woodmen of America, completed an educational training program on financial services for families and small businesses. Modern Woodmen of America is a fraternal benefit society that offers financial services to members.
Health Care
CoxHealth Stroke Center was recognized by The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center, which means it has the capacity to quickly care for stroke victims. Certified centers meet or surpass state standards for effectively treating stroke patients, use evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and comply with national standards and safety rules.
Dr. Frederick A. Ulam joined the psychology staff at Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mount Vernon. Ulam specializes in treating patients with brain injuries. He earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Fresno Pacific University and his master's degree in clinical psychology and doctorate from the California School of Professional Psychology.
Jayne Bullard was named director of finance at Citizens Memorial Healthcare in Bolivar.
She previously was assistant controller for clinic finance at St. John's Clinic. Bullard received her bachelor's degree in economics from Missouri State University and a Master of Business Administration from Drury University.
Dr. David Barbe of Mountain Grove was elected to the American Medical Association's Board of Trustees. Barbe joins 20 physicians from around the country to help set AMA standards and policies.
Barbe has been a member of the association since 1983 and a part of the Missouri delegation to the AMA since 1997. He has served on the AMA Council on Medical Service since 2003 and has spent the last year as chairman of that council. Barbe's term as a trustee will last for four years with the option of re-election in 2013.
The Montclair Retirement Community received the 2008 President's Club Award from its management company, Brightview Senior Living, for reaching targeted goals and high customer satisfaction ratings.
Jack Dunville, a 21-year employee at Montclair Retirement Community, was named the 2008 Associate of the Year for Brightview Senior Living.
Two local health care professionals received 2009 Excellence in Governance awards from the Missouri Hospital Association. They are: Kenneth Joplin, a 25-year board member for Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains; and David G. Hacker, a 26-year board member - and chairman since 2007 - for Citizens Memorial Healthcare in Bolivar, were among six award recipients statewide.
Missouri State University received more than $600,000 in grants from the Missouri Foundation for Health to fund health literacy programming.

Ken Teague, a Springfield Farmers Insurance agent, was named a "championship agent" for his overall performance in customer service, high sales volume and client retention.
