The Future Business Leaders of America recognized New Covenant Academy at its national leadership conference in Denver. New Covenant’s blanket and coat drive for The Kitchen and Missouri Hotel was one of five school projects highlighted.
Finance Cody Carpenter joined Northwestern Mutual as a financial representative with RPS Financial Group. As an intern, Carpenter achieved the Power of 10 Award, which is given to financial representative interns who have written 10 or more paid life insurance policies.

Franchises Screenmobile of Springfield owner Eric Shryer received a 2009 Founders Award at the annual Screenmobile convention. Shryer placed second in 2009 sales in the southwest region.
Health care Cox Monett Hospital Administrator and CEO Gregory D. Johnson started a one-year term as president of the Missouri Hospital Association Southwest District Council. Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree from Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., and a master’s degree in health administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati.
Insurance Don C. Angell was named senior partner at New York Life Insurance Co.’s Springfield office. Angell has 16 years of experience in the insurance industry, most recently as senior partner at New York Life.
Law Dan Ramsdell of Ramsdell Law Firm spoke at the Colorado Trial Lawyers annual conference in Denver. Ramsdell, who serves as national director the Association of Plaintiff Interstate Trucking Lawyers of America, presented “Dan’s Ten Commandments to Winning the Fatigued Trucking Case.”
Attorney Joseph D. “Chip” Sheppard III of Carnahan, Evans, Cant well & Brown PC received an AV Rating from Martindale-Hubbell. The rating is a peer recognition of legal ability and professional ethical standards.
Nonprofit The Kitchen Inc. received a $40,000 grant through the Community Foundation of the Ozark’s Community Response Challenge. The grant was part of a matching fund, with The Kitchen having raised its portion of the funds by an April deadline. The money will benefit the Kitchen’s medical and dental clinic.
The Child Advocacy Center appointed new officers and board members: John Ferguson, president; Kathy Griesemer, vice president; John McKaig, treasurer; and Marcia Johnson, secretary. Board members are Dot Atkinson, Beth Banta, Bonnie Shackter and Cindy Wyrsch.

Utilities Empire District Electric Co. named Blake Mertens director of strategic projects and safety and environmental services. Mertens, an Empire District employee since 2001, earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at Kansas State University and a master’s in business administration at Missouri State University.
