Education The Emerson Charitable Trust contributed $12,000 in scholarships to 12 of the 16 Missouri Colleges Fund schools, including Drury, Evangel and Southwest Baptist universities.
Tom Chiles and Jeffrey Bernhard, Missouri State University students seeking their master’s of public administration, will participate in the U.S. Presidential Management Fellowship Program. Chiles and Bernhard were selected from more than 5,000 candidates.
Seth Jaeger, seeking his master’s of public administration from MSU, received a critical language scholarship from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for studying Russian. Jaeger’s experience with Russian began in Ukraine as a Peace Corps volunteer.
Melissa Burnett and Alexander Wait were chosen from MSU faculty to receive the 2010 public affairs professorship, established to recognize faculty members who excel at enabling MSU to carry out its public affairs mission. Burnett, marketing professor and director of the advertising program, has produced award-winning advertising campaigns during the past 20 years. Wait, a biology professor, was responsible for MSU’s involvement in Focus the Nation, a national teach-in held 2008-–2009, which encouraged faculty across campus to discuss sustainability in their lectures.
Thomas Allen, Dr. Robert Flanders, Dr. Charles Hedrick, Reba Sims and the late Dr. David Heinlein were selected as 2010 Wall of Fame inductees. The former MSU faculty and staff honorees represent 142 years of combined full-time service to the school. They will be honored with plaques in the Plaster Student Union during a ceremony at 2 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Plaster Student Union, Ballroom West.
Paul Sundy, Ozarks Technical Community College alumnus and local entrepreneur, was awarded the first OTC Distinguished Alumni award at the 2010 spring commencement. Sundy is the owner/operator of Springfield establishments Big Whiskey’s American Bar and Grill and Parlor Eighty-Eight Lounge, among others, and is active on the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce.
Finance Daniel Turner was named financial adviser by Waddell and Reed. Turner has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Government State Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Springfield, was elected co-chairman of the Missouri Sportsmen’s Caucus, established to unite elected officials in support of legislation and policies involving hunting, fishing and management of fish and wildlife resources.
