New York Times opinion editor resigns

James Bennet, editor of The New York Times' opinion page, has resigned.

Staff members at the paper have openly criticized an opinion piece from Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Arkansas, that was published in the Times. The op-ed called for the military to be deployed to assist local law enforcement with unrest sparked by the death of George Floyd.

"Last week we saw a significant breakdown in our editing processes, not the first we've experienced in recent years," Times Publisher A.G. Sulzberger said. "James and I agreed that it would take a new team to lead the department through a period of considerable change."
