The MetroCard era has come to an end at the New York City subway after being in place since 1994.
The fare card, known for its finicky magnetic strip, is being retired.
In its place, the subway is fully transitioning to OMNY, a contactless payment system. The payment system was first introduced in 2019 and has become the solution of choice for more than 90% of subway and bus trips.
