Sheldon Silver, the longtime speaker of the New York State Assembly, agreed on Sunday to relinquish his duties on a temporary basis as he fights federal corruption charges, according to the New York Times.
While he hasn't quit his post, he is temporarily delegating his duties as speaker to a group of senior assembly members.
The 70-year-old legislator is accused of abusing his office to receive $4 million in payoffs. He also allegedly hid the source of the income by disgusing it as money he earned working part time as a lawyer.
