Ozarks Technical Community College's new dental hygiene program is now accepting applications until June 1, according to a news release from the college.
The dental hygiene associate of applied science degree program will begin classes in the fall of 2001, pending accreditation by the American Dental Association Commission on Accreditation.
The program is structured for students to complete in two years. Applicants must already be certified dental assistants.
OTC's Dental Hygiene program grew out of local employer need. A 1998 Missouri Dental Association survey to assess the shortage of hygienists showed that:
98 percent of respondents felt there was a shortage of dental hygienists within 30 miles of their practice;
50 percent of those who did not hire a hygienist did not do so because they could not find a hygienist; and
62% of those who could not find a hygienist felt they would be more productive if they could have.
"OTC was in a better position than many colleges to begin a dental hygienist program because many schools can not afford the upfront costs," said Sandy Richardson, OTC Dean of Allied Health programs. "OTC already had a great deal of the equipment available due to the dental assisting program, which will share space and equipment with the new program," she added.
The program was set to move into new space in the remodeled Lincoln Hall on May 16. Those interested in more information about the Dental Hygiene program or an application may call 895-7133.
