Gov. Mike Kehoe has appointed a new Missouri poet laureate.
Justin Hamm, of Mexico, Missouri, was selected for the two-year term starting Oct. 1. The school librarian at Eugene Field Elementary, Hamm has authored five books of poetry and multiple individual works.
Hamm succeeds Springfield resident and author David L. Harrison. Karen Craigo, a reporter at Springfield Business Journal, is a previous Missouri poet laureate.
The poet laureate works to foster poetry statewide via public appearances, readings, workshops and social media. The program started in 2008.
