A Missouri family may receive assistance with its real estate problems via the U.S. Senate, according to a news release from Sen. Kit Bond's office.
The Senate passed legislation July 28 to provide relief to a Pottersville family by making a minor adjustment of the wilderness area in the Mark Twain Forest, the release stated. The bill now awaits the president's signature.
The bill was introduced in the House by Rep. Roy Blunt and passed by the House late last year. Sen. Bond introduced a companion bill in the Senate, which was cosponsored by Sen. John Ashcroft.
The adjustment is necessary to exclude from the Mark Twain Forest approximately two acres containing improvements, including a garage well, mailbox and driveway which were constructed based on a faulty land survey. A later survey revealed that these improvements were located on federal land, Bond's office reported.
The elderly owners of the property had intended to retire and relocate closer to their children and grandchildren, but they could not sell the property until the boundary issue was resolved, the release said.
In a letter July 10, 1998, to Majority Leader Trent Lott, Bond, Ashcroft and Blunt urged Lott to expedite clearance and passage of HR 1779 so that Dan and LaVerne McFarland could be freed from the burden and allowed to enjoy their retirement.
