New Kansas law could spell trouble for engineers

Posted online
A new Kansas law scheduled to take effect in July could be creating unintended hardships for engineers and some segments of the architecture industry, the Kansas City Business Journal reports.

The law establishes new definitions for what engineering and architecture firms in the state do under The Board of Technical Professions, the governing body for those industries. The new definition for engineering now does not include the ability to prepare or provide designs or other technical submissions.

That means engineers, for example, wouldn’t be able to seal project drawings for a pre-engineered metal building used for a warehouse or manufacturing building after the law takes effect. The changes are expected to require more work for consultants on construction projects in Kansas.
