New GM CEO becomes first woman to lead U.S. automaker

On Tuesday, General Motors announced it has named Mary Barra its next chief executive. Barra, 51, succeeds Daniel Ackerman, who is leaving the automaker at the end of the month.
 
Barra is the first female executive at a major U.S. auto company, according to the New York Times, which broke the news of the appointment. Barra, who has worked for GM for the past 33 years, was also named a director of the company when the board approved her promotion to CEO.
 
The announcement was made the same day the Treasury Department stated it has sold the last of the GM stock received from GM when the company received a $49.5 billion bailout.
