New gender options for Facebook users

Posted online
Male, female, androgynous, bi-gender, intersex, gender fluid or transsexual – the Facebook gender options are now as varied as the people who use the social media website.

The Associated Press broke the news Thursday afternoon, reporting Facebook Inc. (Nasdaq: FB) will add about 50 different terms people can use to identify their gender, as well as three preferred pronoun choices: him, her or them.

The new feature will only initially cover the company's 159 million monthly users in the U.S.

The AP reports the move by Facebook represents a basic and yet significant form of recognition of the nation's growing transgender rights movement.
