Germany's Thyssenkrupp and India's Tata Steel on Wednesday announced plans to merge their European operations.
The joint venture would create Europe's second-largest steel producer with annual revenue of nearly $18 billion and over 40,000 employees.
However, the combined venture expects to lay off 4,000 workers. The cuts will be about even between both firms.
