New Covenant Academy shakes up leadership structure

Springfield-based private Christian school New Covenant Academy is shaking up its leadership structure.

Tim Casey, currently the school's chief academic officer, in July is slated to take on the newly created head of school role, according to a news release.

New Covenant Academy currently operates under a leadership system where the board appoints two equal heads of school in the chief academic officer and chief financial officer roles, according to its website. Longtime staffer Marlys Schoenwetter is listed as CFO alongside Casey, the district's chief academic officer since April 2024.

As head of school, Casey will oversee academic programming, strategic vision planning, spiritual guidance and the overall leadership of the district. Schoenwetter will continue as CFO but not in the same leadership capacity, said Glenda Scott, development director for New Covenant Academy.

“We are excited about the future and the opportunities this leadership transition presents,” said Jeff Ward, board chair, in the release. “Dr. Casey’s leadership in his role as chief academic officer has been invaluable, and we are confident that his deep understanding of our mission and his commitment to our school’s values will guide NCA into the next chapter.”

Casey will lead a private school with some 765 students. The school has campuses at 3304 S. Cox Road and 3581 S. Kansas Ave., as well as a junior kindergarten at 3801 S. Kansas Ave.

"I am honored to step into this new role and look forward to working with the entire NCA community to continue building a strong, mission-driven environment for our students," Casey said in the release.

The school has scheduled an April 3 commissioning ceremony to recognize the leadership change.
