Netflix cuts costs by ending Saturday DVD shipments

Posted online
Netflix has quietly stopped sending Saturday shipments to customers of its DVD subscription service, a move that could save the company 10 percent annually on shipping costs, one analyst estimates.

The Los Gatos, Calif., company did not respond to a request for comment by the Los Angeles Times. However, it his indicated on its website it only ships DVDs Monday through Friday, except holidays.

Janney Montgomery Scott analyst Tony Wible had estimated that Netflix shipping costs would be $140 million in 2014 and $117 million next year, with costs coming down as more customers end their subscriptions to Netflix's DVD service. Ending Saturday shipments could save Netflix $14 million in 2014 and $12 million in 2015, Wible said.
