Net neutrality rules go into effect

A U.S. appeals court yesterday denied a telecom industry request for a stay of the Federal Communications Commission’s new net neutrality rules, clearing the way for them to go into effect today.

Approved in February, the FCC now will oversee the Internet as a public utility, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The rules are designed to keep traffic equal on the Web and prohibit Internet service providers from creating so-called fast lanes, giving paying content providers higher status.
