NBC's Brian Williams recants Iraq attack story

Ahh, memory. Such an unreliable device, especially when called upon to remember minute details from more than a decade ago, like whether enemy fire hit the helicopter you were in or the one that landed more than an hour before yours.
 
That pesky detail is coming back to haunt NBC Nightly News and its anchor Brian Williams. Since 2003, Williams has been regaling viewers with the tale of the time when he was touring an Iraq war zone and the Chinook military helicopter he was in was hit by an RPG. On Wednesday, Williams recanted the story because he was called out on it by military personnel who were actually on the downed helicopter.
 
Originally, Williams did report that it was the helicopter ahead of his that was hit. But over time, the story changed. For years and as recently as last week, Williams claimed it was his helicopter that was hit by an RPG. Williams took back his story when soldiers who were there pointed out that Williams, in fact, wasn't.
