National trade group names Morris as prominent retailer

The National Retail Federation named Bass Pro Shops founder John Morris on its inaugural list of people shaping the future of retail.

Among 25 individuals on the list, the CEO of the outdoor goods megaretailer was marked on the “givers” list, those who use their resources for charitable purposes, according to a news release.

Via Bass Pro Shops’ Outdoor Rewards Conservation credit card program, Morris has led efforts to donate millions to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, according to the NRF. The Theodore Roosevelt Conservationist Award recipient also has worked to preserve tens of thousands of acres of natural preserves and parkland in the Ozarks, the NRF said in its release. Honorees are slated to be recognized during an NRF gala Jan. 11 in New York City.

An example of Bass Pro’s outdoor policies came to light in early 2011, when the company cut short a deal to be part of the Green Bay Packers’ Titletown Sports District, citing concerns about potential wetland damage construction would cause. Bass Pro competitor Cabela's Inc. later announced it would build a store at the spot, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

A frequent participant in outdoor causes, Morris in 2012 was given the inaugural citizen conservationist award from the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. The organization named the annual honor the Johnny Morris Award.[[In-content Ad]]
