The National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The Smithsonian-affiliated institution reported debts and assets each between $10 million and $50 million. The case has between 200 and 999 creditors.
The museum filed a proposal to pay off $16 million in debt over 26 years.
The 100,000-square-foot museum has more than 30,000 artifacts.
