The owners of National Art Shop, 509 S. National Ave., held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting Jan. 12 to celebrate the company's 40th year of business in Springfield. Jerry Sanders and his mother, Louise Prater, opened the shop in 1970 as a response to a lack of art supplies. Sanders met with Bob Johnson, then the curator of the Springfield Art Museum, and several art instructors at what was then Southwest Missouri State University, about what products to carry. The shop moved to its current location as part of an expansion in 1986. The company now has eight full-time employees.
