NAHB touts 1,000-plus certified green professionals

Posted online
More than 1,000 representatives of the home building industry have earned the certified green professional educational designation since it was introduced earlier this year by the National Association of Home Builders. Eleven of those NAHB certified green professionals are in the Ozarks, according to the Home Builders Association of Greater Springfield.

To earn the designation, builders, remodelers and other industry representatives must complete 24 hours of classroom training, including 16 hours focused on green building. They also must have two years of industry experience, must sign a code of ethics and must commit to fulfilling continuing education requirements.

“Of course, we expected the CGP to be popular, because as green building grows, many consumers are looking for a builder with real credentials in today’s market. Nevertheless, this is phenomenal growth,” said NAHB President Sandy Dunn, in a news release.

“Homeowners and home buyers are demanding more green products and features in their homes, and the building industry wants to meet that demand. That’s how this market works,” Dunn added.

In a separate release, NAHB announced that it is accepting nominations for the 2009 NAHB National Green Building Awards.

Awards will be presented in several categories, including Advocate of the Year, Project of the Year, Development of the Year, Outstanding Green Marketing and HBA Green Building Program of the Year. A new category also has been established for the Local Government Award, which will recognize a government body that has worked to allow and encourage green practices. Eligible projects must have been started after June 2007 and substantially completed by December of this year. Entry requirements and electronic applications are available at www.nahb.org/greenbuildingawards. No paper applications will be accepted, according to the release, which also noted that nominations for the Local Government Award must come from a local home builders’ association.
