Music matriarch Presley dies at 84

Posted online
Bessie Mae Presley, the matriarch of Branson’s famed musical family, died Aug. 12 at the age of 84.

Presley had battled pulmonary fibrosis and diabetes for several years, according to a news release.

In 1967, Presley and husband Lloyd, along with their four children, a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law, left Springfield for Branson to open Mountain Music Theater – the first music theater along Branson’s Highway 76 strip. The theater later became Presleys’ Country Jubilee.

Presley never performed on stage but worked behind the scenes, doing bookkeeping, sewing costumes and selling concessions.

Visitation was held Aug. 16 Branson’s Greenlawn Funeral Home, and funeral services were the same day at Tri-Lakes Church in Branson.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted to Skaggs Community Health Center Foundation.
