Multiple crime lab plans unveiled

The proposed forensic crime lab in center city is going through an identity crisis.

Springfield City Council saw three different renderings of the new facility at its noon luncheon today, including one originally presented in August but criticized for being too modern. Click here for large versions of each design.

Two new options were unveiled to the council. Both reduced the amount of glass used in the design and attempted to make it more compatible with the surrounding neighborhoods.

“Either one of them goes a lot better, I think, with (the Jordan Valley Innovation Center) and the way it’s looking right now,” Mayor Tom Carlson said at the meeting.

A consensus has not yet been reached on which design will get final approval. Creative Ink Architects and Buxton-Kubik-Dodd Inc. are collaborating on the design for the facility, which is being funded through a combination of federal and state funds and a $2.4 million, low-interest loan from a consortium of 15 area banks.

The city hopes to put out bids on the project before the end of the year, with a goal of opening in January 2008.
