MU football muscle scares college administrators everywhere

In the wake of the resignations Monday of University of Missouri system President Tim Wolfe and Chancellor Bowen Loftin, college administrators from across the country are shaking in their boots at the power that athletics’ programs pose, according to The Kansas City Star.

The Star spoke to several administrators from across the country on condition of anonymity, and the threat of a boycott that surfaced over the weekend from members of the Mizzou football team, which was supported by the head coach and helped lead to the resignations, demonstrates the vulnerability of schools that count on the revenue athletics’ programs provide.

The power dynamics within college sports will never be the same, they said.

Racial tensions at Mizzou had been brewing for months following a series of tense of events that prompted one grad student to start a hunger strike calling for Wolfe’s resignation and ultimately prompted many football players to threaten a playing boycott until the former president stepped down.
