Missouri State University's interim chief diversity officer for the last year has a new title.

Algerian Hart, who was selected as interim chief diversity officer and assistant to the president in August 2022, now has been named assistant to the president for inclusive engagement. Hart said via email the MSU Board of Governors approved the change, effective July 1, at its June 23 meeting.

"It will have a greater emphasis on inclusive engagement, seeking community building both on and off campus," Hart said.

He said he would help lead the university's public affairs pillars of ethical leadership, cultural competence and community engagement, as well as continue "to promote MSU as a world-class university that welcomes all who desire to pursue a higher education."

The position additionally calls on Hart to craft strategies to improve MSU's internal and external cultures, according to the board agenda.

"Because we desire to value intersecting identities of all of our community members and organizations, you are asked to help us celebrate and uphold diversity," the agenda reads. "As such, in collaboration with administrators in academic affairs, student affairs, administrative services, human resources, compliance, athletics and other university units, you will help establish and coordinate initiatives, programming and practices to continue cultivating an inclusive environment."

Hart's salary for the new position, including a 5% across-the-board raise, is $173,250, according to the agenda.

In being named interim chief diversity officer last year, Hart took over for Wes Pratt, who retired in August 2022 after working for the university since 2007, according to past reporting.
