Missouri State University announced today it will begin offering a bachelor's degree program in geotourism in the fall semester.
The degree combines cultural and environmental geography with community planning, development and tourism, according to an MSU news release.
The degree is intended to help students prepare for entry-level positions in sustainable tourism development, which could lead to careers in philanthropic foundations, tour operations, convention and visitor bureaus, community development and environmental organizations.
The program will be offered in the university's department of geography, geology and planning.
Linnea Iantria, instructor in the department, said in the release she is optimistic about the effect the program will have.
“Offering a bachelor’s degree in this rapidly growing field will attract many of the best, brightest and most civically engaged students from Missouri, across the nation and around the world, who in turn will make an important impact on the cultural, educational and economic growth of their local communities, states and countries," she said.
MSU will be utilizing materials and information provided by National Geographic's Center for Sustainable Destinations, the release said.[[In-content Ad]]
