MSU summit addresses value of higher education

State and national education leaders tomorrow will discuss the economic and social value of higher education at a daylong summit sponsored by Missouri State University.

“Higher Education and the Public Good” begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Kansas Room of University Plaza Convention Center, 333 S. John Q. Hammons Parkway.

The morning session will feature a discussion of the public investment into higher education. Scheduled speakers are Alisa Cunningham, director of research for the Institute for Higher Education Policy in Washington, D.C. and Michael Baer, a partner with Issacson and Miller in Washington, D.C. and former senior vice president of the American Council on Education.

The afternoon speaker will be John Burkhardt, director of the National Forum on Higher Education for the Public Good at the University of Michigan.

A panel of Missourians then will address the value of higher education to Missouri. Panelists scheduled to participate are Rep. Carl Bearden, R-16; Brady Deaton, University of Missouri-Columbia chancellor; Barbara Dixon, president of Truman State University; and Jim Anderson, president of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

The summit is free and open to the public.
