MSU implements smoke-free campus

Posted online
Missouri State University tomorrow will institute a smoke-free policy on its campus, an initiative in the works since August 2010.

MSU took its first step toward becoming smoke-free two years ago when it laid out 26 designated smoking areas across campus. Effective Aug. 15, smoking only will be allowed during performances, at four designated areas outside JQH Arena, Plaster Stadium, Hammons Student Center and Juanita K. Hammons Hall, and inside private vehicles located on university parking lots, according to a news release.

“Missouri State University strives to ensure a healthy learning and working environment by promoting a culture of health and wellness,” said Sheila Bowen, employee wellness coordinator, in the release.

Complaints against students or faculty members could lead to disciplinary action.

The fall 2012 semester begins Aug. 20, and MSU is expecting 18,500 students at the Springfield campus, according to a separate release.
