Mimi Garstang, the first woman to serve as the state geologist of Missouri, will receive an honorary degree from Missouri State University in May.

The MSU alumna will receive the doctor of public affairs degree during spring 2026 commencement.

“Mimi is deserving of this doctorate because she is the embodiment of Missouri State’s public affairs mission,” said Bill Sandel, selection committee chair and an associate professor at MSU, in a news release. “She has done so much for the field of geology and the state of Missouri.”

The honor was supported by the MSU Board of Governors, Faculty Senate and MSU President Richard “Biff” Williams.

In 1972, Garstang graduated with a degree in geology from what is now MSU. Six years later, she joined the Missouri Geological Survey, part of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Garstang made history as the first woman to serve as state geologist of Missouri and director of the Missouri Geological Survey in 2000.

In these roles, she led Missouri to rank among the top 10 states for mineral production, according to MSU.

The university said she educated the public about environmental issues, promoted environmental policies in the state legislature and organized continuing education for geologists and engineers.

Since retiring 15 years ago, Garstang has worked with the Association of Engineering and Environmental Geologists and the American Society of Civil Engineers to support ongoing training for professionals and fund undergraduate scholarships.

MSU awarded its first honorary degree in 2003. The purpose of the award is to recognize achievements by Missouri citizens, especially those with ties to the community in hope of encouraging others.
