MSU, Discovery Center teach real-world skills

Posted online
Elementary students from Republic will become mayors, news anchors and police officers for a day at the Discovery Center of Springfield.

More than 275 Republic students will visit the center today, and again March 13, to run “SIFE City,” an educational program put on by Missouri State University’s Students in Free Enterprise.

Once a week for four weeks, Republic students have been learning the skills needed to succeed in the real world. Those skills will be put to use when the center’s Discovery Town becomes a “real town.”

While some students will take on city leadership roles and common jobs, others will be responsible for providing for families and grocery shopping.

Guest speakers will include Republic Mayor Jim Collins, an Emergency Medical Technician from St. John’s and a DARE officer from the Springfield Police Department. Each will discuss his or her job and the education necessary to have a career.[[In-content Ad]]
