While the program’s administration remains in Springfield, graduate students will take national security and defense courses in Fairfax, Va.
The program offers a Master of Science in defense and strategic studies and generally takes two years to complete.
The concentration of military professionals and other industry resources in the area will allow students to gain a hands-on education. The move is expected to attract government leaders as adjunct faculty as well.
“The D.C. area offers unparalleled educational and pre-professional opportunities for students,” said Dr. Lorene Stone, dean of MSU’s College of Humanities and Public Affairs, in a news release. “The concentration of relevant government, defense industry and nonprofit think-tanks located in the area provides professional networking, student internships, part-time employment, public seminars and other educational activities.”
The relocation was funded by external sources including private foundations, corporations and nonprofit centers devoted to promoting national security education.
