The search for his successor begins immediately, according to an MSU news release.
Fairbairn joined the MSU faculty in 1988 as dean of continuing education. Under his leadership, the college has grown to include seven departments and has an annual operating budget of more than $10 million.
Fairbairn is the second person to hold the position.
In other MSU news, Art Spisak was named director of the Honors College, effective July 1 and pending MSU Board of Governors approval.
Spisak would serve a three-year term, subject to satisfactory annual evaluations.
The position change is part of MSU’s University College reorganization plan, which was approved by the board at its March meeting.
As director, Spisak would be responsible for administration, curriculum, faculty recruitment and student recruitment for the Honors College.
Spisak currently is a professor of modern and classical languages and has been a faculty member at MSU since 1996.
