MSU awards handful of construction contracts

Posted online
The Missouri State University Board of Governors approved a handful of bids yesterday for construction and renovation projects in Springfield.

The largest bid approved was a $1.8 million contract for Springfield-based Carson-Mitchell Inc., which was given the green light to perform renovations on MSU's Kentwood Hall in downtown Springfield, according to the board's March 19 agenda.

The project, which has a total budget of $2.5 million, calls for the refurbishment of student rooms on floors two through six with new carpeting, paint and drapes; retrofitting student bathrooms with new fixtures and finishes; and reworking much of the plumbing throughout the building. The contract also calls for renovations to the staff apartment, offices and computer lab, as well as a new student kitchen to be constructed on the lower level.

Kentwood Hall was built in 1926. The date was noted in the budget because the contingency line item increased due to a stronger chance of unknown problems as part of the renovation process.

The university board also voted to award a renovation contract to St. Louis-based Lawrence Group, which submitted a low bid of $1.1 million for the renovation of Sunvilla Tower on the MSU campus.

To be paid for through auxiliary system revenue bonds issued last month, the project includes installing a fire suppression system throughout the building. The project also calls for other safety improvements, as well as a new mechanical system to connect the tower to the campus chilled water loop; updating the finishes in student rooms and apartments; reinstalling kitchens in the apartments; performing exterior work to make the building more weather-resistant; and constructing a Federal Emergency Management Agency storm shelter, according to the agenda.

Other project bids awarded yesterday include:
  • a $339,579 contract to Rogersville-based Bailey Co. for Phase I renovations to the third floor of the university's Plaster Student Union, which carries a total project budget of $686,000;
  • a contract award to Springfield Mechanical Services Inc. for its low bid of $304,715 to perform computer lab renovations at Glass Hall; and
  • a $504,677 contract to Beachwood, Ohio-based Tremco Inc. to replace the roof of Hutchens House residence hall.
During its meeting yesterday, the board also voted to increase the budget for improvements to its athletic and recreational fields to $27.1 million from $26.8 million. Springfield construction firm DeWitt & Associates Inc. was selected for the job late last year, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.
