MSSU coach killed outside movie theater

Posted online

On the school’s homecoming weekend, Missouri Southern State University's 37-year-old assistant football coach Derek Moore was fatally shot as he was leaving a movie theater Friday in Joplin.

Police told the Los Angeles Times the shooting was targeted. The Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office filed charges Saturday against Jeffrey Bruner, 39, of murder and armed criminal action.

According to an Associated Press report published by the News-Leader, Bruner confronted his estranged wife, who was with Moore outside the theater. Police did not say how Moore knew Bruner's estranged wife.

The LA Times reports Moore, who had a 7-year-old son, was in his first year at MSSU as an offensive line coach. He had 14 seasons of collegiate football under his belt.
