Motorcycle rally expected to bring $1.4M in spending to Springfield

Posted online

A motorcycle festival scheduled to come to Springfield this month is expected to generate $1.4 million in spending.

The 49th annual BMW Motorcycle Owners of America National Rally is slated to take place June 16-18, according to a news release from the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau.

"The group dates back 50 years to 1972, when five friends formed a motorcycle club to stay in touch with each other," officials said in the release. "Today, the group is a network of riders from all 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces and seven continents."

The CVB is expecting around 5,500 attendees for the event, which also will include the MOA Karol Patzer Children’s Charity Challenge to benefit Springfield nonprofit Care to Learn.

The motorcycle rally is the second vehicle-based event to create an economic impact in Springfield in as many months.

The 39th annual Street Rod Association Mid-America Street Rod Nationals, held May 27-29, resulted in an economic impact of over $1 million, said Dana Maugans, director of sales for the CVB. Prior to the event, the organization projected 7,000 attendees and 2,150 room nights at local hotels.

I am so glad to see they are doing a Charity Challenge in honor of Karol Patzer. She was a good friend and an inspiration to all women motorcyclists. She had friends all over the world through her motorcycle connections.
