Morey Mechlin selected for chamber award

Community volunteer Morey Mechlin was chosen to receive the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Athena Award.

Selected by an independent panel of judges among 20 nominees, Mechlin is scheduled to be honored during a March 6 luncheon at the White River Conference Center, according to a news release.

The Athena Award — named for the Greek goddess of intelligence, wisdom, arts and sciences — is modeled after a nationwide program that recognizes individuals for their community service accomplishments.

“Morey’s commitment to others makes her a true role model,” chamber President Matt Morrow said in the release. “She’s one of the busiest people you’ll ever meet, and yet there are so many stories about her willingness to mentor others and help them strengthen their leadership skills and build social capital.”

Mechlin is the retired first executive director of Springfield nonprofit Care to Learn and past president of Junior League of Springfield. She’s involved with the Greene County Medical Alliance, the Springfield-Greene County Library District, the chamber board and the Rotary Club of Springfield.

During the March event, 2018 Athena Award honoree Jan Fisk, mayor pro tem, is slated to present the honor to Mechlin. The chamber also plans to announce a new award created in honor of late attorney Virginia Fry, who died of cancer in November. The award will be presented with the Athena Award in 2020, according to the release.
