Monsanto introduces first seed plant to Russia

Creve Coeur-based seed giant Monsanto plans to open its first plant in Russia in coming years, increasing its activities in the world’s fourth largest grain producer as amid a plunging ruble.

Monsanto already operates in Russia through a system of partners and distributors, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The ruble has nearly lost half of its value against the dollar in the past year, due largely to falling oil prices, political tension and a faltering economy. A Monsanto representative who heads operations in the Middle East told Reuters the company plans to increase locally produced seeds in Russia and to have a facility there – a move made more attractive by the state of the ruble.
