The Missouri Department of Transportation has received an award from the governor's office for its construction of the diverging diamond interchange at Kansas Expressway and Interstate 44.
MoDOT was honored with the Pinnacle Award from the Governor's Awards for Quality and Productivity selection committee. The Pinnacle Award was created this year specifically to honor the diverging diamond project, because it exceeded the typical qualifications looked for in honorees, the release said.
The interchange - the first of its kind in the country - was completed in June 2009, the release said.
The awards recognize state employee work groups for continuous improvement, quality and productivity in Missouri state government.
City Council approved an additional diverging diamond at National Avenue and James River Freeway in June 2009 while the original was in construction.
That $7.5 million project provided additional freeway lanes near National and has been in
operation since July 12.
