MoDOT will use 'sound cannons' to deter work zone speeding

Hear something funny while driving? You might be speeding through a work zone.

The Kansas City Business Journal reports the Missouri Department of Transportation has been testing acoustic devices, which can broadcast messages and pain-inducing "deterrent" tones over long distances.

As a driver passes the device, it emits a sound at volumes, "as loud as a hair dryer with your windows up or police siren with your windows down," according to MoDOT's website.

The devices are similar to those used in crowd control.
