The avenue closing at the railroad crossing north of Commercial Street will be effective Feb. 15.
The same portion of the street will be closed beginning at 8 a.m. Monday for reconstruction necessary to permanently close the street to vehicle and pedestrian traffic by February. Traffic will be directed to use Grant Avenue.
In December, Springfield City Council voted 6-2 to close the avenue crossing. Residents from Woodland Heights and Grant Beach neighborhoods near the crossing have opposed the closure, saying the detoured traffic will be pushed to their streets.
According to the city, Zone 1 Councilman Denny Whayne has created a committee of representatives from the Woodland Heights and Grant Beach neighborhoods to recommend the city use BNSF's payment for neighborhood improvements. Members are expected to have their first meeting next week.
