MO ranks as top entrepreneurial state

Posted online
Missouri ranked No. 6 in entrepreneurial activity by state in the Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity for 2011.

For every 100,000 people, 400 Missourians, or 0.4 percent, created businesses each month during 2011, according to the report. For the 2010 index, Missouri ranked No. 35 with 290 entrepreneurs per 100,000 people.

For the latest index, the sample size for Missouri was 9,904 people. The index is based on the Current Population Survey, which is conducted monthly by the U.S. Bureau of the Census and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The index counts people ages 20 to 64 who started businesses.

“Missouri’s dramatic jump in the Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity in 2011 is another strong sign that our economy continues to turn in the right direction," Gov. Jay Nixon said in a news release, pointing to state projects such as the Missouri Small-Business Loan Program, the State Small-Business Credit Initiative and the Missouri Strategic Initiative for Economic Growth. "It’s clear that our relentless focus on creating jobs and growing our economy is beginning to pay off.”

An average of 0.32 percent of the U.S. adult population, or 320 per every 100,000 adults, created a new business each month during 2011, translating into approximately 543,000 new businesses per month during the year, according to the report.

From 2010 to 2011, entrepreneurial activity rates on average decreased in all regions of the country, except for the Northeast, which experienced a slight increase. Arizona led the charge, with 520 entrepreneurs per 100,000 adults, while West Virginia was at the bottom of the list with 150 per 100,000 adults, according to the report.[[In-content Ad]]
