MO gas prices fall 30 cents below national average

Posted online
The average price of gasoline in Missouri fell 6 cents per gallon during the week of May 22-28 to $3.35 per gallon on Memorial Day.

The state gas average was 20.3 cents lower than a month ago and 23.3 cents lower than a year ago. Comparatively, the U.S. average, which dropped 3.6 cents during the week to $3.65 per gallon, was 15.7 cents lower than a month ago and 13.4 cents lower than the same day in 2011, according to a GasBuddy.com news release.

"Summer driving season has officially begun with the national average falling far lower than we expected it to earlier this year," said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy.com senior petroleum analyst, in the release. "Had you asked me back in January if the national average would have been that low on Memorial Day, I would likely have chuckled, but it goes to show anything is possible."

GasBuddy.com analysts originally predicted the national average would hit its highest point at $4.15 per gallon in May, but according to the release, the U.S. average peaked April 5 at $3.92 per gallon.

The Missouri gas average increased to an average $3.36 per gallon this morning, ranking the state No. 8 on GasBuddy.com's list of the lowest gas averages. South Carolina, with an average of $3.22 per gallon, held the top spot.

As of 9:17 a.m., the least expensive gas in Missouri was available for $3.04 per gallon at a filling station in Harrisonville. In Springfield, the lowest price could be found at Murphy USA, 3516 W. Sunshine St., for $3.24 per gallon, according to MissouriGasPrices.com.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil was trading at $91.62 per barrel as of 9:19 a.m., down from $92.29 a week ago. Light sweet crude oil futures for July were trading at $91.49 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, according to the CME Group.[[In-content Ad]]
