Washington, Mo.-based Happy Apples has recalled caramel apples following a widespread listeria outbreak.

The family-owned company said in a statement it recently learned from Bidart Bros., which supplies apples to its California facility, of a possible connection between the outbreak and the Bidart apples, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The apples being recalled have a best-use date between Aug. 25 and Nov. 23 and were sold in 31 states.
