Mitsubishi Motors cheated on mileage tests for 25 years

Posted online
The saga of Mitsubishi Motors Corp. continued Tuesday when the Japanese car manufacturer admitted it had dodged government regulations on fuel economy testing for 25 years.

Mitsubishi previously stated it had only submitted noncompliant data to the nation’s transport ministry since 2002. An executive vice president for the company Tuesday said the deception goes back to 1991, when the Japanese government changed required testing methods.

Also in question are the company’s previous statements that the noncompliant models only were sold in Japan. U.S. auto safety regulators are seeking more information about which vehicles may be affected.

Japan’s sixth-largest automaker has lost half of its market value – roughly $3.9 billion – since news of the false data broke last week, according to Reuters.
