Long before Mitchum Jewelers became a household name, it was a dream sparked in the heart of a young boy with a fascination for time.
In the sixth grade, John Mitchum received his first watch. He immediately took it apart, determined to understand its inner workings—but putting it back together proved to be a challenge. In that moment, he knew he wanted to be a watchmaker. Years later, he turned that passion into a business, opening his first shop in the Ozark town square, where small businesses thrived on handshakes, reputation, and relationships.
Ozark wasn’t the obvious place for a jewelry store. The town was small, the economy was uncertain, and jewelry wasn’t exactly a necessity. But when John purchased Trantham Jewelry, he wasn’t just buying a business; he was investing in a future where jewelry would mark life’s most cherished moments. “Jewelry is more than metal and stones” he once said. “It’s about meaning, milestones, and memories.”
He started small, selling affordable wedding sets, but his vision quickly grew. As Mitchum Jewelers expanded, so did the store—doubling in size with every move, four times over. Through six decades of change, only one thing has remained the same: the clock on the wall representing the spirit of a young boy determined to build something greater.
As a kid, Randy Mitchum swept floors, cleaned display cases, and ran errands for his father. To him, it was just part of growing up in a family business. But as he got older, something changed. He saw the look on people’s faces when they picked up engagement rings. He watched his father remember customers by name, celebrating their milestones.
“I realized that we were not just selling jewelry. We were part of people’s biggest moments. That’s when I knew, this was what I wanted to do,” Randy recalls.
The conversation about taking over the business was inevitable, but Randy didn’t just want to run Mitchum Jewelers, he wanted to grow it. He envisioned a store that could bring the luxury of big-city jewelers to the Ozarks while keeping the warmth of a family-owned business.
In 2015, Mitchum Jewelers moved into a stunning new showroom, designed to elevate the jewelry-buying experience while keeping it welcoming and personal.
Because at its core, Mitchum Jewelers has never been about selling jewelry.
“What most people don’t realize is that they are not really buying a ring, a necklace, or a watch,” Randy explains. “They are buying the feeling, the moment that will never be forgotten. When we start our day thinking about that, it changes everything.”
That philosophy has shaped everything Mitchum Jewelers does, from the low-pressure experience to the team members who make every person feel like family.
“The reason we’re able to celebrate 60 years of business is because of our loyalty to our community and customers, and their loyalty to us,” says Randy.
As Mitchum Jewelers celebrates their 60th year anniversary, the mission remains the same: to help people honor love, milestones, and memories that last a lifetime.
“Trends will come and go. Products and people may look a little different. But celebrating love and connection will never go out of style.”
