Missourians yet to claim $33.9M in stimulus checks

Posted online
Thousands of Missourians have yet to claim a total of $33.9 million in economic stimulus payments from the federal government, according to the Missouri Budget Project.

The organization says 113,147 low-income seniors, veterans and people with disabilities need to claim their checks, which are part of a national economic stimulus plan approved by President Bush early this year.

Many of the checks belong to people who did not need to file tax returns this year because their incomes were too low, according to a news release. A tax return is necessary to receive a stimulus check, however. Missourians have until Oct. 15 to file a return.

For those needing assistance to receive a stimulus payment, the AARP and National Council on Aging offers this online tool. Service providers in southwest Missouri who can also help are at Southwest Center for Independent Living, Southwest Office on Aging and The VantAge Point, all in Springfield, and The Independent Living Center in Joplin, the release said.
