Missouri Sports Hall of Fame sets reopening date

For the first time in more than four years, the doors of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame’s memorabilia-packed museum will open.

The public will be able to walk through the museum in downtown Springfield starting Aug. 12, officials say. It is located next to the hall’s new headquarters at 431 W. Walnut St. and will be open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“This moment represents resilience,” said Rob Marsh, president and CEO of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, in a news release. “There were challenges, there were uncertainties, but there was never a moment where we lost sight of the mission. This museum is a reflection of that commitment to preserve these stories and to ensure they continue to inspire future generations.”

In an interview, Marsh said the roughly 5,000 square feet of display space is smaller than the hall’s longtime office and museum home near Highland Springs Country Club.

Marsh said he “stretched every dollar” to transform the former office space on Walnut Street. He said the project cost roughly $50,000 and included paint, lighting and removing walls.

“We don’t have the square footage we once had,” he said. “It’s fully ready to go right now, but we are going to be constantly swapping memorabilia out.”

He said featured displays will rotate based on the sports season. For example, football will be spotlighted in the fall.

“We’ve maxed out every square inch,” he said.

The museum honors key Missouri athletes and sports moments.

Marsh said the museum recently created a wall listing the name of every inductee, and he wants inductees and their family members and friends to be able to visit the space and its preserved memorabilia.

“That has been at the forefront of my mind that we’ve got to get this open,” he said.

The hall plans to participate in First Friday Art Walk, and Marsh plans to schedule a VIP reception and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Marsh said he has identified “several really good options” for a permanent home in Springfield but plans to be in the current space through 2026 and likely most of 2027. He said the busts of sports figures that once adorned the exterior of the hall’s former home are in secure storage.

“This is an important step forward for the Hall of Fame,” said Dan Nelson, chair of the board, in the release. “We are proud to see the museum return in a way that strengthens our connection to the community while honoring the legacy that has made this organization so meaningful to so many.”

The nonprofit was located in a 34,000-square-foot building at 3861 Stan Musial Drive from 1994 until October 2024. The building was sold to businessman Jim Hagale, but terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The museum had been closed for renovations since 2021.
