Missouri Republicans hold onto contributions from DeLay

Posted online
A handful of Missouri Republicans who accepted past donations from former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay have said they don't yet intend to return the campaign contributions.

DeLay was indicted last week for his work with Americans for a Republican Majority – the same political action committee responsible for several campaign contributions to Missouri Republicans.

Southwest Missouri Congressman Roy Blunt is retaining a $15,000 contribution from ARMPAC.

Similarly, Sen. Jim Talent, who accepted a $5,000 contribution to his campaign in 2002 from ARMPAC, is holding back until a decision is made in DeLay's case.

“As a practical matter, Senator Talent is not going to presume anyone in this situation is innocent, but he’s not going to presume they’re guilty either,” said Sen. Talent spokesman Rich Chrismer. “Everyone is entitled to their day in court, and Senator Talent is reserving judgment at this time.”

After Missouri Congressman Kenny Hulshof, 9th District, returned about $15,000 he had received from DeLay since 1996, Missouri Democrats issued a call for Talent to do the same.

“Now is the time to finally cut the cord with Tom DeLay,” said Jack Cardetti, Missouri Democratic Party spokesperson, in a news release. “If fellow Republican Kenny Hulshof has the integrity to return this dirty money, so should Jim Talent.”

Rep. Sam Graves, serving the 6th District, has said he will not return $37,500 from DeLay unless he is convicted.

Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, 8th District, also has not returned a $1,000 contribution from DeLay.
