Missouri reached a settlement with the owners of the Bridgeton Landfill, near St. Louis.
Bridgeton Landfill LLC, Allied Services LLC and waste-management company Republic Services agreed to a $16 million settlement.
The settlement resolves allegations that the companies allowed a fire under the landfill to harm local residents. It was located 600 feet from World War II-era radioactive waste.
The state filed suit against the companies in 2013.
